Etsy Goodness: Bohemian Textiles

Hmong woman in market via flickr
Lately, I'm finding myself drawn to bright colors and intricate design.  I've always loved bohemian style, so when I found KulshiMumkin's shop on Etsy, I was blown away.  Kai makes the most beautiful bags and crafts with vintage textiles, beads and trim made by the Hmong tribe people of Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China.  It's hard to pick a favorite, as each and every piece is different and unique.

Celeb Inspiration

I love this look on Elle Macpherson.  Very bohemian, but still elegant and fun.  Her vintage shawl is to die for!  "Piano shawls" became quite popular in the Victorian era when having a piano in one's parlor was considered to be at the height of sophistication.  You can now wear these pieces, originally designed to drape over a piano, to drape yourself!  I recently bought a very similar one for my shop.  It's from the 1920's, embroidered silk crepe with hand knotted silk thread fringe.  LOVE.
Hmmm, this one might find its way into my closet...

Etsy Goodness: Egyptian Revival

In Victorian times, new archeological discoveries brought an archeological revival that extended to costume jewelry. The revival resurfaced in the 1920's and 30's, then again in the late 1950's and 1960's with the release of the movie Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Then again, in the 1970's, more revival jewelry was offered by the best jewelry houses to commemorate King Tutankahmen's world tour.  And now, talk of Angelina Jolie playing Cleopatra in an upcoming film has me thinking about snakes and Egyptian themed jewels.

Needless to say, I wouldn't want one of these cold blooded creatures actually coiling itself around my body. But there's something about snake jewelry that's glamorous and fun.

They Don't Make Them Like That Anymore: Bisque Dolls

I've never been one to collect anything, but these adorable dolls I recently acquired for my etsy shop have me thinking twice.  Made in the 1920's and 30's, these little toys were meant for children to play with (can you believe it?!) Usually made in Japan, these "penny dolls" were sold at candy shops and drugstores alongside the candy.  How sweet...

Czech Please!

Prior to World war I, "czech" jewelry was mostly unmarked, and called bohemian.  In 1918, the Czechs and Slovaks united and were freed from the rule of Austria and Hungary, and the land they now lived in became known as Czechoslovakia. (A little history lesson! Who knew!).  I am always amazed at how beautifully made these pieces are.  You can find this one here.

Sparrows in Flight

Now this is more like it.  Anthropologie silk sparrow top.
I don't know why, but I've always been drawn to these little birds. I purchased these vintage/antique sparrow pins from a great little shop on Etsy. So cute!
